The Card Shop
The Card Shop is an activity that helps illustrate the importance of change management within organisations. It is designed to replicate poor change management by making people feel uncomfortable, frustrated and uncertain as they progress through each stage of the activity.
They are not supposed to have all the answers – this is the point! Instead they will get more pieces of information as they go along and by the end they should have everything they need to fully understand and commit to the change. The aim is that by the end of the activity they realise this to be the case and are more likely to strive to ensure full information is given during change processes they are part of in the future.
The debrief is designed to pull out the thoughts and feelings they experienced as they went through the activity and to help them realise how important change management is and the part they can play within it.
The activity is built around the Ambrose model of change below, whereby if certain pieces of the puzzle are missing it leads to confusion, anxiety etc.
Each stage of the activity introduces a new element of the formula until all the pieces are in place to create a successful change.
